What you’ll do
As our first AI engineer, you will:
- Design and build agentic systems for scientific reasoning. Multi-step planning, tool usage, experiment decomposition, uncertainty handling.
- Architect personalized memory and retrieval pipelines that identify what is truly relevant to each researcher’s objectives. Build rich representations of datasets, literature, provenance, and project context, with the broader ambition of modeling the structure of scientific reasoning itself.
- Own model evaluation and benchmarking. Design evaluation methods for reasoning tasks, emergent capabilities, and domain-specific quality measures where ground truth is uncertain.
- Build training and fine-tuning pipelines. Small research-domain models, data systems, alignment strategies, model distillation.
- Drive our AI product direction end-to-end: engage directly with users to identify opportunities, run fast experiments to evaluate emerging techniques, and design interfaces that deliver AI features through clear, elegant user experiences.
Who you are
- You love science and scientists. Maybe you have scientists in your family, have a technical degree and did research in college, or maybe you just feel a sense of wonder when you look up at the Milky Way on a dark, moonless night.
- You have a track record building ML/LLM systems that shipped. Production or research settings where people actually used what you built.
- You are a full-stack builder with strong end-to-end product instincts. You are someone who can prototype quickly, ship thoughtfully, and own features from architecture to UX.
- You are deeply engaged with the frontier of AI — you are comfortable experimenting, fine-tuning, and bending state-of-the-art models to fit real workflows and novel product ideas.
Prior (and/or ongoing) research experience—academic or industry—is a significant plus. A PhD (in CS/ML or related disciplines) or equivalent depth of research experience is a strong advantage.
Even if all of these don't apply, please reach out if our mission and attitude resonate. Humans are not checklists.
